View on Good Underground Art Space
The exhibition is part of the Excellence Award organized by SLY Art Space, featuring a dual exhibition by Lan Chung-Hsuan and Chen Yu-Ju that seamlessly integrates their works.
Upon first arriving at the exhibition space, Chen Yu-Ju immediately noticed the distinctive musty smell in the basement. To her, this scent occupied all her senses. As with her previous site-specific artworks, Yu-Ju incorporated the scent into her work, using the source of the musty smell: water. As you descend the stairs, you will be dripped on by water. At the bottom of the stairs, a European-style fountain, as white as squirrel soap, allows you to wash away the dirt you just encountered. Then, a forest appears before you. Yu-Ju uses the damp imagery of the forest to transform the musty smell. However, each tree is artificially collected and erected; they have lost their natural functions, retaining only their appearance.
Lan Chung-Hsuan's "An Inner Ghost" (2017) was created during an artist residency in Finland, coinciding with the Ghost Month in Taiwan. Despite being in a remote forest on the other side of the world, the artist still received reminders about the taboos of Ghost Month from Taiwan. The artist questioned these rules and wanted to reject their cross-border restrictions. In the video, the artist consciously violates several selected Ghost Month taboos, but not in a provocative way—simply performing human actions in pure nature. This series of videos is played on various traditional televisions, symbolizing the influence of taboos from the previous generation, as well as the transmission of these taboos through society, family, and media.
